If one of these points is off, it quickly becomes apparent in everyday use: laundry looks grey, smells musty, becomes stiff, or the machine accumulates residues in the drawer and on the seal.

1) Water hardness: what it is and why it changes dosing
Water hardness describes, simply put, how much calcium and magnesium salts are dissolved in the water. In everyday life you notice it as limescale deposits on fittings or in the kettle. In washing, hard water matters because limescale „binds“ components of the detergent. Part of the detergent is then no longer available for cleaning, but used to neutralize the limescale. That is why you must dose higher with hard water than with soft water.
Practically this means: if you do not know the water hardness, you often dose by feel — and frequently miss the mark. Especially in regions with hard water, consistent adjustment is noticeable: less greying, less stiff laundry, fewer deposits in the machine.

- Water utility/provider: Many municipalities publish the water hardness online (often as „°dH“ or hardness category). This is the most reliable basis.
- Test strips: Inexpensive, fast, sufficiently accurate for dosing. Important: immerse correctly and follow the timing instructions.
Once you know the hardness, write it down (e.g. on the detergent cupboard). You don’t need to measure it every time.
2) Load: „Full“ is not the same as „overfilled“
The amount of detergent depends on the laundry weight in kilograms. Many people estimate this incorrectly — usually too high, which leads to overdosing. For practical purposes, a rough classification is sufficient:
- Half load: Drum visibly airy, laundry falls loosely.

Powder, gel, caps: What that means for dosing
The type of detergent not only affects cleaning performance, but also how precisely you can dose.
Powder detergent: well dosable, often strong for whites
Powder can be adjusted to water hardness and level of soiling using measuring cups or dosing spoons. Many powders contain oxygen-based bleaches (no chlorine), which can help with whites and against grey film. For colored or dark textiles, color powders without a bleaching component are common.
Practical note: Powder sometimes dissolves less well in very short programs or at low temperatures. In that case the correct detergent compartment, a not overfilled drawer and sufficient water in the program are important.
Liquid detergent (gel): convenient, but overdosing happens easily
Gel is practical at low temperatures and can be dosed directly. At the same time there is a strong temptation to add “a generous splash” more. Especially with soft to medium water this often leads to residues on the textile (laundry feels waxy) or in the detergent compartment.
If you use gel, a measuring cap is helpful — but even more important is to use the cap according to the actual quantities and not “to the top”. Some households benefit from using a dosing ball that goes directly into the drum: the gel then reliably ends up in the laundry and not as residue in the compartment.
Caps and pods: simple, but limited in adjustability
Caps are pre-portioned. That can work well when your water hardness and load match the portion. The downside: fine adjustment is hardly possible. With a half load or soft water a whole capsule is often too much; with very hard water or heavily soiled laundry sometimes too little.

Mistake 1: Water hardness is ignored
If you live in a hard-water area and dose as if the water were soft, you miss the effect of the water-softening agents. Result: grey film, stiffer textiles, more deposits. Conversely, with soft water a “hard-water dose” is often unnecessarily high and leaves residues.
Fix: Check the water hardness once, note the hardness range, and align the dosing table accordingly.
Mistake 2: “Heavily soiled” becomes the default setting

Eco programs: less water, longer time
With Eco: do not automatically use more detergent. Rather the opposite: if you previously dosed at the upper limit, Eco can make the problem more visible. Use a correct base dosing according to water hardness and load.
Short programs: critical for powder and heavy soiling
Short programs save time, but also mechanical action and rinsing performance. For lightly soiled laundry they are often sufficient. For heavier soiling, a normal program is usually more effective than „short + more detergent“.
Low temperatures: good for everyday use, but not for everything
30–40 °C are sufficient for many items. For towels, bedding, or when odor is an issue, occasional 60 °C can be useful — not as a permanent setting, but as a hygiene and machine-maintenance measure. This also affects dosing: if you wash a lot at low temperatures, accurate dosing becomes more important so that no residues remain in the system.

A good routine lives from not being annoying in everyday life. These aids make dosing easier:
- Measuring cup with a clear scale (for powder or gel): find the correct mark once, then it becomes automatic.
- Dosing ball (for liquid detergent): reduces residues in the dispenser and makes the amount tangible.
- Note the water hardness on the detergent cabinet: prevents the “I’ll check later” problem.
