These substances are natural and generally not critical for health, but they react visibly in the household — especially when heated and in combination with soap and detergent.

  • soft: up to approx. 8.4 °dH
  • medium: approx. 8.4 to 14 °dH

You do not have to guess your water hardness. There are several methods — from very reliable to ‚good suspicion‘. The most sensible approach is to obtain a value and check the typical signs in daily life.

1) Check water hardness with your supplier (quick and stable)

Water suppliers usually publish the water hardness for your region (sometimes by district). This is the most reliable basis for detergent dosing. Search for ‚water hardness‘ plus your town or check the information on the water tariff.

Context: In mixed supply zones or depending on the season the value can fluctuate. For dosing and routines, however, the published figure is generally sufficient.

2) Test strips or drop test (for apartment/household)

If you want to know the value specifically for your apartment: test strips are quick but rather coarse (compare color fields). A drop test (reagent, counting drops) is usually more accurate. For everyday use it is sufficient to know with confidence: soft, medium or hard — and approximately where you fall.

Typical source of error: color comparison in poor light or too short immersion time. Measure twice if in doubt.

3) Scale rings on faucets, glass and sink

White, chalky rings around the faucet, on chrome, the shower wall or the sink form when water evaporates and minerals remain. The faster these rings reappear, the more likely high water hardness is.

Important: Even at medium hardness you can see scale — especially where water stands. With hard water scale typically accumulates faster and in thicker layers.

4) Kettles and coffee machines quickly develop deposits

A rough, light deposit in the kettle or frequent descaling of the coffee machine is consistent with hard water. Heating elements and hot surfaces are typical places where scale precipitates.

5) Soap lathers less, leaving a „film“

Calcium and magnesium ions can react with soap and certain surfactants. This produces insoluble residues (colloquially „soap scum“). You notice this as reduced lather and a quicker dulling sensation on the skin or in the bathtub.

6) Laundry looks dull, whites turn grayish, dark textiles show light streaks

If textiles feel rough despite the correct program, whites lose brightness faster, or dark clothing shows light residues, this is often an interaction of water hardness, detergent residues and rinsing behavior. Limescale and surfactants: Why „simply more detergent“ often creates new problems

A common reflex is to use more detergent with hard water. That can help in the short term, but often produces side effects: more residues in textiles, deposits in the machine and, tendentially, more odor problems because residues „remain“ in damp areas.

The better approach is: dose detergent according to water hardness and, where necessary, use targeted water softeners instead of permanently overdosing.

Deposits in the machine: Scale is only part of the story

Hard water promotes scale deposits in areas that are heated (e.g. the heating element) or where water evaporates. In addition there are deposits made of detergent residues, fats and dirt. These organic residues form particularly when washing is done mainly at low temperatures, too much detergent is used, or the machine stays continuously damp.

In practical terms this means: „descaling“ does not automatically resolve odor issues. And „more fragrance“ neither removes scale nor residues.

  • Gray film on light-colored laundry: whites lose brightness faster, especially bed linen, shirts and towels.
  • Towels become stiff: less fluff, sometimes reduced absorbency (often combined with residues).
  • Light streaks on dark clothing: visible residues after drying.
  • Higher detergent demand: because part of the cleaning power is bound by hardness builders.
  • More scale maintenance: in the bathroom, in the kitchen and on appliances.

Detergents for hard water: How to determine an appropriate dosage

Step 1: Determine water hardness (soft/medium/hard)

Step 3: Consider load, but don’t overdo it

A very full drum needs more detergent. At the same time the difference is often smaller than expected. Especially with hard water it is more important that the base dosage is correct and that the machine can rinse well.

What about Caps/Pods?

Caps are convenient, but inflexible: you cannot finely adjust the amount to water hardness and load. In regions with hard water this can mean: sometimes too little (laundry looks dull), sometimes too much (residues). If you use caps, pay attention to suitability for hard water and avoid overloading — that helps with rinsing.

Softeners and water softening: what actually helps?

If hard water noticeably impairs your washing results, there are two levels: softening in the wash cycle and softening for the whole household.

In-wash softener (targeted, no retrofit)

A softener binds calcium and magnesium ions so that detergent can work more effectively. This is particularly useful when you dose correctly for ‚hard‘ and still have residues, grey film or dull textiles. In practice a softener can also help to keep detergent quantities under control.

Limits: Softeners do not compensate for fundamental errors such as overloading, permanently too-cold programs or chronic over-dosing. They are one component, not a substitute for routine.

Central water softening system (major leverage, but effort)

A permanently installed system lowers water hardness throughout the household, which can reduce scale pressure in bathrooms, kitchens and on appliances. However, it is an intervention that requires maintenance, space and regular checks.

Frank assessment: For many households this only pays off if scale is a constant nuisance in daily life (not just when washing). If the primary problem is laundry, solid results are often already achieved through dosing, rinsing behavior and targeted machine maintenance.

Maintaining the washing machine with hard water: treat scale and residues separately

With hard water it is worthwhile to distinguish two causes: scale (mineral) and residues/biofilm (organic). Both ultimately look like ‚deposits‘, but require different measures.

1) Hot maintenance wash: against residues and odors

A regular wash at 60 °C or higher (with suitable laundry or as a maintenance program) helps reduce fat and detergent residues. This is especially relevant if you predominantly wash at 30–40 °C. The goal is not ’sterile‘, but less deposit where odors persist.

2) Descaling: when it makes sense

In regions with hard water, occasional descaling can be sensible, especially if you wash at high temperatures frequently or limescale forms visibly quickly on appliances. If you wash almost exclusively at low temperatures, residues are often a bigger issue than limescale.

Typical mistake: descaling very frequently ‚on suspicion‘ or with overly aggressive agents. That increases effort without automatically delivering better laundry. Better: descaling as a targeted measure when hardness and usage make it plausible.

3) Detergent drawer and door seal: small routine, big effect

Detergent drawers collect detergent residues and, with hard water, more visible deposits. The door seal often remains damp and traps lint. A short routine (rinse out, wipe once, air the machine after washing) is usually more effective than infrequent large-scale cleanings.

If towels become stiff: separate causes cleanly

Scratchy towels are quickly blamed on limescale—often rightly, but rarely solely. It is frequently a combination of:

  • Water hardness: minerals affect hand and can accumulate.
  • Detergent residues: especially from overdosing or poor rinsing.
  • Fabric softener: subjectively softens but can reduce absorbency and promote residues.
  • Drying: pure air-drying without movement naturally makes terry cloth stiffer than a tumble dryer or vigorous shaking.

Practical measure: dose according to water hardness, do not overload, spin well and shake towels vigorously after drying. A tumble dryer (moderate program) is often the biggest ’softening‘ measure—without additional agents.

Gray haze, light streaks, dull colors: what you can do concretely

If laundry looks worse, ‚a different detergent‘ is rarely the first step. This short check in order has proven effective:

1) Adjust dosing to hardness (without overcompensation)

Check whether you are actually dosing for ‚hard‘ when your water is hard. Underdosing leads to gray haze more quickly. Overdosing more often leads to residues and visible streaks on dark garments.

2) Do not overload the machine

An overfull drum means less movement, poorer rinsing. With hard water, residues then remain more visible. As a rough guideline: leave about a hand’s breadth of space at the top of the drum (depending on the textile).

3) Improve rinsing performance purposefully

If you frequently see streaks or experience a ‚waxy‘ feel, an additional rinse cycle can help—especially for heavy textiles, for sensitive skin or if you once overdosed. This does not have to become standard, but it is an effective corrective measure.

4) Choose the detergent type appropriately

For durable, white laundry powder is often practical, because it (depending on the product) contains components that cope better with hardness and keep whites stable. For colored items, color detergents are sensible to protect dyes. Regardless, dosing and rinsing are usually more decisive than ‚powder versus gel‘.

Hard water and stains: does laundry actually get less clean?

Yes, hard water can reduce cleaning performance because part of the detergent effect is bound by minerals. In practice this often appears less as a ’stain remains‘ and more as a gradual change: textiles look overall less clear, whites go matt, colors appear duller.

With specific stains (grass, blood, grease), other factors are often more important: prompt pretreatment, appropriate temperature, sufficient program duration. Hard water is then an additional factor, but rarely the sole cause.

Home remedies like vinegar, citric acid and baking soda: use with RESTraint

You often read online „vinegar in the washing machine, problem solved.“ That is too general. Acids can dissolve limescale, but uncontrolled long-term use in the washing machine is not automatically advisable.

Vinegar in the wash or as a fabric softener substitute?

Vinegar can temporarily reduce certain residues and thereby make items feel „softer.“ As a long-term solution it is difficult to control, is easily overdosed and is not ideal for every application. If you experiment with it: infrequently, in low doses and not as a standard routine.

Citric acid for descaling

Citric acid is a common descaler. What matters is correct application: appropriate dosage, sufficient contact time, sensible temperature. If you are unsure, descalers with clear instructions are often less hassle, because concentration and procedure are defined.

Baking soda against limescale?

Baking soda is alkaline and is used more for odors. It does not soften water in the same sense as a water softener and is not the first choice against limescale. For typical problems caused by hard water, it usually helps only to a limited extent on its own.

Practical routine: How to get hard water under control when washing

If you want a routine suitable for everyday use, start with these points. They often achieve more than new products:

  1. Clarify water hardness (supplier or test) and align detergent dosing to it.
  2. Keep loading normal: don’t cram, so movement and rinsing work.
  3. Dose consciously: water hardness plus soiling, not by feel.
  4. Wash regularly warm/hot (if appropriate for the textiles), to reduce residues.
  5. Maintain the detergent drawer and rubber seals briefly: rinse out, wipe damp edges, ventilate the machine.
  6. Use water softeners or descaling agents selectively, if you still see clear signs despite the basic routine.

Limits and common sources of error: What else it may be due to

Even with hard water, not all washing problems are „limescale.“ Common alternatives or contributing causes:

  • Persistently low temperatures: promote residues and odors, regardless of water hardness.
  • Too much detergent: often leads to dull laundry and more buildup in the machine.
  • Too little detergent: in hard water conditions it shows up more quickly as a grey film.
  • Very short programs: often rinse less thoroughly, residues remain more visible.
  • Overloading: less friction, poorer rinsing, more residues.

The good news: Many of these points can be improved without special products—through dosing, loading and a few maintenance steps that are realistic in everyday life.
