Bright white — how white laundry really stays white

29. April 2025 6 Min. reading time

White clothing has style. It looks fresh, classic and elegant, and pairs with almost anything. Whether a plain T‑shirt, a smart blouse or bed linen — white belongs in every wardrobe. Yet however attractive light garments are, they are maintenance‑intensive. After repeated wear they quickly lose their brightness, becoming gray, yellowish or otherwise discolored.

Bright white — how white laundry really stays white

White clothing has style. It looks fresh, classic, elegant and can be combined with almost anything. Whether a plain T-shirt, a smart blouse or bed linen – white belongs in every wardrobe. But as attractive as light-coloured garments are, they require care. After several wears they quickly lose their brightness, become grey or yellowish, or develop stains that are hard to remove from the wash.

With the right care, suitable detergents and a few proven home remedies, you can ensure that your white laundry remains bright for a long time – completely without aggressive chemicals.

1. Sort white laundry correctly

The first step in washing begins before the washing machine — when sorting. White laundry should always be washed separately, so never together with dark or coloured clothing. Colours can run, which permanently discolours the white items or makes them greyish. Different shades of white — for example bright pure white and warm cream white — should also be treated separately, as they can behave differently.

When sorting, also pay attention to fabric types: delicate fabrics such as lace, linen or silk need more care than sturdy cotton or linen.

2. Selecting the right detergent

White laundry needs a specific detergent that not only cleans but also brightens. Heavy-duty detergent in powder form or universal detergents usually contain bleaching agents that help restore brightness. We recommend the AlmaWin heavy-duty detergent powder or AlmaWin universal detergent.

With ecological detergents such as the Sonett detergent modular system, you should additionally use the Sonett bleaching complex to achieve the desired brightening effect. This combination is particularly environmentally friendly and effective against grey haze.

For delicate fabrics, special fine-wash or wool detergents without aggressive ingredients are more suitable. Recommended products here include AlmaWin wool detergent or Sonett olive detergent for wool and silk.

3. Washing temperature: not too cold

Temperature has a major impact on the washing result. You should wash white laundry at least at 40 °C to remove dirt, bacteria and light discolourations. For particularly hygienic cleaning, for example bed linen, towels or underwear, 60 °C are ideal.

Important: Always follow the care instructions on the garment label. Delicate materials cannot tolerate high temperatures and should always be washed on a gentle cycle.

4. Preventing a grey veil – home remedies help

Over time white laundry loses its brightness – it can appear grey or yellowish. Simple home remedies help counter this:

  • Baking soda: Add half a cup to the drum – it refreshes laundry and has a mild bleaching effect.
  • Vinegar: A splash of vinegar in the fabric softener compartment removes residues and prevents greying.
  • Citric acid or lemon juice: Particularly helpful for yellowish haze – ideal for soaking.
  • Baking powder: Inexpensive, effective and versatile – either add it to the detergent or use it for pretreating stains.

These home remedies are not only effective but also environmentally friendly and gentle on the skin.

5. Pretreat stains specifically

Stains on white clothing are particularly noticeable. Therefore they should be treated promptly and specifically. Suitable products for pretreatment include:

Apply directly to the stain, let it sit for a few minutes and then wash as usual. For stubborn stains it can help to soak the laundry overnight in lukewarm water with a little detergent beforehand. Again, always read the garment label carefully beforehand.

6. Sunlight – the natural brightener

What our grandmothers already knew: whites look particularly good when dried outdoors in the sun! UV light acts like a natural bleach and gently lightens discoloration. If you have the option, hang white laundry outside to dry – ideally in a sunny, airy place.

However, take care not to expose delicate textiles to direct sunlight for too long, as they can become brittle or discolored.

7. Proper care makes the difference

Regular care helps preserve the whiteness of your clothing. Use natural brighteners if necessary, such as washing soda, citric acid or the Sonett Bleichkomplex in addition to detergent. Please avoid aggressive chemical bleaches – they burden both the environment and the textiles.

Also the right drying matters: Dry white laundry outdoors where possible and don’t leave it in the machine while damp for too long – this prevents musty odors and mildew stains.

8. Delicates – extra careful

White garments made from delicate fabrics such as silk, lace or linen should be treated particularly gently. Use a mild detergent for delicates and select an appropriate program with a low spin speed, or wash by hand.

Place delicate items in a laundry bag to protect them from mechanical abrasion. Dry them flat, not hung – this preserves their shape.

9. Avoid yellowing from deodorant & sweat

A common annoyance: yellow discoloration under the armpits or around the collar. These often result from the reaction of sweat with aluminum-containing deodorants.

Tip: Use aluminum-free deodorants, such as the Eubiona Sport Deo Roller, and wash white tops as soon as possible after wearing. This prevents the sweat from setting in.

10. Store correctly – for long-term freshness

How you store your white clothing also affects its appearance. Store items in a dry, well-ventilated place – not in plastic or colored bags that can bleed or promote mildew.

Ideal are white cotton bags or cardboard boxes. To further protect laundry and keep it fresh, lavender oil or the ARIES Anti-Moth Scent Dispenser help – they repel moths and provide a pleasant scent.

Conclusion

White laundry requires a bit more attention – but it’s worth the effort. With the right detergents, natural remedies and considered care, your garments remain bright, hygienically clean and pleasantly fresh for a long time. Sort properly, pay attention to temperature, treat stains immediately and use sunlight as a natural ally.

This way you keep your favorite pieces in the brightest white – day after day.
