Simple all-purpose cleaner: When a DIY recipe is appropriate and when it isn't

A DIY all-purpose cleaner can be practical for light soiling—but it is not suitable for every surface or situation. This article explains a simple, safe base recipe, appropriate dosages, material limits, hygiene considerations and clear no-gos.

What an all-purpose cleaner is supposed to do — and what not

The principle is usually simple: a surfactant (detergent-active substance) loosens dirt and grease, water carries it away, and mechanical action (cloth, wiping motion) does the REST.

Important is the distinction. An all-purpose cleaner is typically not intended to:

  • reliably remove limescale (this usually requires an acid, e.g. citric acid or vinegar — with material limitations),
  • remove baked-on grease in the oven (alkaline kitchen cleaners or soaking are more effective here),
  • eliminate mould (this is a separate issue, often requiring protective equipment and root-cause analysis),
  • disinfect (cleanliness is not automatically disinfection; disinfection is only appropriate in specific situations),
  • sensitive natural stones or oiled surfaces cleaned „in passing“ (risk of dulling, leaching or staining).

If you use DIY recipes, it is therefore worth setting clear expectations: effective everyday cleaning — yes, „one product for everything“ — no.

When a DIY recipe is really useful

A self-made all-purpose cleaner can be a good solution when these conditions are met:

  • Light soiling: dust, everyday splashes, mildly greasy fingerprints.
  • Robust, wipeable surfaces: e.g. painted furniture (test carefully), tiles, plastic surfaces, doors, light switches (use sparingly), kitchen fronts without special coatings (test first).
  • You want fewer products: instead of many specialist bottles, one basic cleaner plus targeted specialty products for limescale/grease/hygiene.
  • You accept material tests: a short test in an inconspicuous area is part of the process.
  • You work with a clean bottle and clear labeling: DIY is only „simple“ if storage and handling are safe.

DIY is also practical when you want very mild cleaning, for example in households with sensitive skin. Still decisive is: dosing and thorough rinsing/wiping afterwards are often more important than „strong“ ingredients.

When a DIY all-purpose cleaner is unsuitable

There are situations in which DIY recipes are more likely to cause problems — through material damage, residues or a false sense of security. Avoid a DIY all-purpose cleaner particularly in:

  • Natural stone (e.g. marble, limestone, travertine): Acidic mixtures can etch, even mild ones. But overly alkaline mixtures or the wrong cloths can also alter the surface.
  • Oiled or waxed wood: Excess water and surfactant can attack the protective layer or cause stains. Here, a very mild soap solution and a damp-wipe technique are more important than an “all-purpose” approach.
  • Aluminium (e.g. certain frames, sheets, kitchenware): Alkaline cleaners (washing soda) can cause tarnishing, depending on the alloy and surface.
  • Near electronics: Screens, keyboards, power strips — here only minimally damp, use appropriate products and observe safety (power off).
  • Hygienically sensitive areas with concrete risk (e.g. after gastroenteritis, in care settings): A suitable cleaner/disinfection plan is more appropriate than a homemade mix.
  • If children or pets can access bottles: Even harmless ingredients must be stored securely.

Also important: If you use strongly scented or potentially irritating ingredients (concentrated vinegar, highly concentrated citric acid, alcohol), DIY is not automatically “gentler.”

The basics: What a DIY all-purpose cleaner contains

Many recipes online appear interchangeable. It is better to understand the function of the components:

  • Water: Carrier and diluent. Lukewarm water can dissolve better, but it should not be too hot when filled into spray bottles.
  • Surfactant (e.g. dish detergent): Dissolves grease/dirt and improves wetting. Too much surfactant often causes streaks and leaves sticky residues that attract dirt again.
  • Acid (e.g. vinegar, citric acid): Helps against limescale and mineral deposits. For an all-purpose cleaner, acid is often unnecessary and problematic because of material risks.
  • Alcohol (ethanol/isopropanol): Can dissolve fats and evaporate faster. It is flammable and can attack certain surfaces (e.g. coated, sensitive plastics). Not mandatory, optional and to be used with caution.
  • Baking soda/washing soda: Mild to strongly alkaline. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is weaker; washing soda (sodium carbonate) is stronger and more skin-irritating. For spray cleaners neither is automatically sensible, because residues can remain and materials can react.

An “all-purpose” approach is therefore often best when it remains mild, surfactant-based and easy to wipe off.

Simple all-purpose cleaner: a cautious DIY base recipe

This recipe is deliberately simple and aimed at everyday surfaces. It relies on dish detergent as the surfactant and avoids acids/alkalis, which lead more quickly to material problems.

Recipe (for a 500 ml spray bottle)

  • 500 ml lukewarm water
  • 1/2 teaspoon (approx. 2–3 ml) mild dish soap

Mixing: Fill the clean spray bottle with water, add the dish soap, gently swirl the bottle (do not shake vigorously, otherwise you will get a lot of foam). Done.

Why so little dish soap? In practice overdosing is the most common cause of streaks on kitchen fronts and sticky residues on floors. Less is usually better here. If it is not enough, increase minimally (e.g. to 1 teaspoon per 500 ml) instead of adding “by feel.”

Optional variant for lightly greasy kitchen surfaces

If you frequently have a light grease film in the kitchen, a small proportion of alcohol can help — but only if the materials tolerate it and you handle it safely.

  • 450 ml water
  • 1/2 teaspoon mild dish soap
  • 50 ml Ethanol (e.g., alcohol/denatured alcohol of suitable quality)

Important notes: Alcohol is flammable. Do not use near open flames, do not apply to hot surfaces. Test on painted, sensitive or unknown surfaces first. If you are unsure: stick with the basic variant.

Safe use: How to clean without causing damage

A DIY cleaner is only part of the equation. At least as important are technique, dwell time and the right cloth.

1) Dry first, then wet

Remove dust and crumbs dry first (dust cloth, vacuum). Otherwise you will rub particles over the surface — this can cause micro-scratches, especially on high-gloss fronts or sensitive plastics.

2) Spray onto the cloth, not directly onto the surface

This reduces the risk of liquid running into edges, joints or electrical components. It is the safer method especially for kitchen fronts, light switches, door handles or furniture edges.

3) Allow a short dwell time — but do not let it dry

For normal soiling 10–30 seconds is sufficient. For slightly greasy surfaces it can be 1–2 minutes. Do not let the mixture dry: surfactants can then remain as a film.

4) Wipe again if necessary

If you see streaks or the surface feels “sticky”: wipe with a clean, slightly damp cloth and then dry. This applies especially to glossy surfaces, glass frames, tiles and floors.

5) Take hand protection seriously

Even mild mixtures can defat the skin. For prolonged cleaning or sensitive skin, use gloves. If there is spray mist: ventilate well and avoid direct inhalation.

Material check: Where the recipe works well — and where to be cautious

The following notes are deliberately conservative. Manufacturer specifications for furniture, floors or appliances take precedence.

Generally suitable (with normal precautions)

  • Tiles (wall/floor), provided grout is intact and not over-wetted
  • Plastic surfaces (e.g., external bin lids, plastic chairs) — test at an inconspicuous spot first
  • Painted doors and frames — use little water, do not leave it standing in edges
  • Kitchen fronts (painted or foil-covered) — use sparingly, follow up with a wipe, keep edges dry

With testing and particular caution

  • High-gloss: A microfiber cloth may, depending on quality and pressure, cause micro-scratches. Prefer a very soft cloth, low pressure, and if necessary rinse with clear water afterwards.
  • Stainless steel: Dish soap can leave streaks. Always wipe in the grain direction, rinse with clear water afterwards and dry.
  • Screens: Do not use all-purpose cleaner. Use dedicated screen cleaners or a minimally damp, suitable cloth.
  • Rather unsuitable

    • Natural stone: even mild surfactant solutions can be problematic, depending on the stone and impregnation. Use cleaners specifically suitable for stone here.
    • Oiled wood: a damp wiping soap solution instead of spray cleaners; use water sparingly.
    • Unsealed, sensitive surfaces (e.g. chalk paint, some matte lacquers): risk of stains and glossy spots.

    Hygiene and durability: How long is DIY in a spray bottle acceptable?

    DIY mixtures are generally not preserved. This is an important difference to commercial cleaners. Microorganisms can multiply in water over time, especially if the bottle is not clean or comes into contact with soiled cloths.

    In practice this means:

    • Make small batches: Preferably 250–500 ml that you will use within a reasonable time.
    • Keep the bottle clean: Rinse with warm water before refilling, occasionally clean with dish detergent and allow to dry thoroughly.
    • Don’t let it sit „forever“: If odor, cloudiness or streaking changes, dispose of the mixture, clean the bottle and make a fresh batch.
    • Don’t repurpose food containers: Risk of confusion.

    If you need to clean in hygienically sensitive situations, a DIY all-purpose cleaner is not the right tool. In those cases clear modes of action, contact times and appropriate agents matter.

    The most common mistakes with DIY all-purpose cleaner — and how to avoid them

    Overdosing

    More dish soap does not automatically mean better cleaning. Often it results in sticky films. Start mild, increase in small increments, and wipe again with clear water if necessary.

    Too much spray mist in small rooms

    Spray bottles create a fine mist. In a bathroom or small kitchen this can irritate the airways — even without „harsh“ ingredients. Ventilate, spray onto the cloth, and avoid unnecessary aerosols.

    „Everything in one bottle“: Vinegar + baking soda and other combinations

    Popular but not very useful: vinegar (acid) and baking soda (alkaline component) react with each other, it foams and carbon dioxide is produced among other things. For cleaning effect what remains is usually a rather weak salt solution. That looks spectacular but is rarely effective.

    Even more important: certain mixtures are dangerous. This especially includes mixing chlorine-containing cleaners (e.g. some toilet or mold products) with acids such as vinegar or citric acid. Toxic gases can form. If you are not sure what is in a product: do not mix, rinse thoroughly with water, and only then use another agent.

    Wrong cloth or too much pressure

    An aggressive scouring pad or a „hard“ microfiber cloth can damage surfaces. For sensitive surfaces prefer soft, clean cloths and light pressure. For heavy soiling prefer contact time and repeated wiping rather than scrubbing.

    DIY versus buying ready-made: A pragmatic decision guide

    Whether making your own all-purpose cleaner is worthwhile rarely depends only on price. Decisive factors are everyday suitability, material risk and your cleaning routine.

    DIY often makes sense when …

    • You want a mild standard cleaner for many everyday surfaces.
    • You clean deliberately and rewipe, rather than giving surfaces a „once-over“.
    • You are willing to keep bottles clean and to remake mixtures regularly.

    Ready-made cleaners are often more appropriate when …

    • You need consistent quality and longer shelf life.
    • You have more specific tasks (limescale, grease, sanitary, disinfection as required).
    • You have sensitive materials and prefer a product with clear manufacturer specifications.

    In many households a pragmatic middle ground makes sense: a mild DIY all-purpose cleaner for everyday use, plus a limescale cleaner (appropriate for the material) and a kitchen grease remover for the few cases where „mild“ is not sufficient.

    Short practical plan: How to build a safe routine

    If you want to get started, a clear procedure helps prevent DIY from becoming a source of error.

    1. Choose a bottle: a sturdy spray bottle, ideally neutral and not resembling food packaging.
    2. Label: contents and date (e.g. „All-purpose cleaner mild – 24.07.“).
    3. Prepare the base recipe: water + a small amount of dishwashing detergent.
    4. Material test: an inconspicuous spot, wipe briefly, dry, check after 24 hours.
    5. Everyday application: spray onto a cloth, work with a damp-wiping technique, rewipe if necessary.
    6. Renew regularly: small batches, keep the bottle clean.

    Conclusion: A simple all-purpose cleaner can help — if you respect its limits

    A DIY recipe for a simple all-purpose cleaner is primarily sensible when you use it as a mild assistant for normal everyday soils: few ingredients, low concentration, a clean spray bottle, damp-wiping technique. This reliably cleans many surfaces without unnecessary product variety.
